The X-Men are brought before Lilandra and the Shi'ar who proclaim that the Phoenix entity within Jean Grey must be destroyed; Xavier initiates a trial by combat and the X-Men battle the Imperial Guard with Jean's life at stake; The X-Men are quickly dispatched but Jean manifests the Phoenix and attacks; Phoenix allows herself to be shot with a blast that separates her from Jean Grey but Jean doesn't survive the experience; The X-Men each give a small part of their essence to restore Jean to life.
