At three issues, ESCAPE masters the suspense-driven nail-biting action you’ll find in something like Call of Duty, only it’s in comic form with an art style that gives it a rare voice. What I can praise this series for thus far is how each instalment operates as a legitimate chapter of a novel. So often ongoings from the big two get bogged down in padding out rather than mapping out their developments. Nowhere to be seen in ESCAPE, the premise is clearly set in issue #1; the stakes are given in #2; and the action begins in #3—and what glorious exhilaration it is! Not only that, but the mix of cute character designs mixed with graffiti street-art colours harkens to an urban myth surrounding the tale. As if it’s a legend à la Banksy. Part of me wishes less greys and browns were used and the palette was similar to ‘60s stuff like the Howling Commandos in STRANGE TALES or CAPTAIN AMERICA in the ‘80s. I don’t understand the push for realism in the comic medium, I think the point is that it can express hyperboles and irregular visuals without warrant of believability. If you enjoy DC war comics or FPS games then look no further as this is exactly what you need.
