A science fiction classic Star Trek debuted in 1966, pioneering the development of the genre and spawning a successful and enduring franchise, the series followed the 23rd century adventures of Captain James Tiberius Kirk and the crew of the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.

Captain Kirk was immortalised by William Shatner in Star Trek: The Original Series and in seven feature films. During a visit to The Perth Mint in 2018, the beloved actor personally envisioned a coin design that depicted Kirk together with the planet Jupiter. Mr Shatner subsequently endorsed this latest Star Trek release, calling it “a lovely design filled with meaning”. Meaningful Design

The coin’s reverse design portrays a coloured representation of Captain Kirk on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and the Star Trek: The Original Series logo. Visible from the ship’s viewpoint is the planet Jupiter and one of its many moons, a reference to Jupiter’s personal significance to William Shatner.
